About Velum

Velum is an independent press devoted to literature behind the veil.

We publish writers who want you to know their work — not their biography, brand, platform, or personal mythology.

For most of modern publishing, the book was the thing. The author’s name mattered, but the machinery around the author didn’t. Over time that changed. Writers became brands. The industry began asking authors for audiences, platforms, personalities, and marketable lives.

The work slowly became secondary to the person who produced it.

Velum exists to reverse that order.

We publish anonymous authors so that the writing can stand on its own. No bios. No headshots. No carefully engineered personal narrative to explain how to read the book. Just the work.

Readers are invited to encounter the text directly — the way literature functioned for most of its history.

Some writers will eventually reveal themselves. Some won’t. That decision belongs to them, not to the market.

Our only interest is the work.

Who We Are

  • A velum is a veil.

In anatomy, the velum is a soft tissue structure that separates one chamber from another — a thin partition that controls what passes through.

In manuscripts, vellum (a linguistic cousin) was the surface on which books were written for centuries.

The name sits at the intersection of those meanings:

    A veil, a membrane, a writing surface.

Velum is the space where the author steps back and the writing passes through.

  • The modern publishing system is broken. Book deals are brokered based on follower counts. We believe a book should not need a personal brand to justify its existence.

We believe literature becomes weaker when it is forced to compete with personality.

We believe readers deserve the experience of discovering a voice without being told who that voice is supposed to be.

We believe anonymity changes how writing is read. It removes shortcuts. It removes assumptions. It removes marketing narratives that tell the reader what to admire.

Without those signals, only the writing remains.

Sometimes that’s uncomfortable. It should be.

  • Velum publishes:

    • Literary fiction

    • Hybrid and formally experimental work

    • Novels and collections that resist easy categorization

    • Work that rewards close reading

We are less interested in genre boundaries and more interested in writing that creates its own rules and sustains them.

If the work is strong enough to stand without an author brand attached to it, it’s the kind of work we want to see. For authors with professional, personal, or safety-related reasons for needing anonymity, you are exactly who we built this for.
